What is Capoeira??

Capoeira is a Afro-Brazilian art form that blends martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and music into a dynamic and engaging experience. Originally developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil, Capoeira was disguised as a dance to preserve their cultural traditions while secretly training for self-defense.

Today, Capoeira is practiced worldwide as a powerful way to develop strength, flexibility, rhythm, and coordination while fostering community and cultural appreciation. In a roda (a circle where Capoeira is played), two participants exchange movements in a playful, strategic game, accompanied by live music and singing.

Whether you're looking for fitness, self-expression, or a new challenge, Capoeira offers something for everyone—regardless of age or experience!

First Roda of the Month

Join us for our Monthly Open Roda (pronounced "hoda") Everyone is welcome! All levels of movers are welcome. No uniforms required.

A Capoeira roda is a celebration of Brazilian culture, history, and resilience. It's a space where individuals come together to connect, express themselves, and honor the rich heritage of this Afro-Brazilian martial art.

Capoeira Roda: is typically formed by participants standing in a circle, with musicians seated nearby. The circle symbolizes unity and community. Capoeira practitioners, called capoeiristas, take turns entering the roda to play. When inside the roda, capoeiristas engage in a dynamic exchange of movements, combining elements of dance, acrobatics, and martial arts.

Capoeira is often described as a game rather than a fight. It's about improvisation, strategy, and expression. Players "play" Capoeira by engaging in a series of fluid, rhythmic movements while maintaining a dialogue of kicks, sweeps, and dodges. The game is non-contact, focusing on skillful evasion rather than direct confrontation, but contact can be made.
